An Unexpected Blog Post

It’s MONDAY!

I GOT MY POST OUT ON TIME!!!

So, on Friday, I ditched my little sister and parents to spend the night at my big brother DJ’s house. Ever since I heard Mom and DJ watching Lord of the Rings LOUDLY while I tried to sleep, I always wanted be included. I recently had a birthday, and DJ promised we would watch The Hobbit, since it’s more colorful. So, after a old family friend’s housewarming, my mom and sister went home, and I went with DJ and his wife B. We went to Best Buy and bought The Hobbit movies, looked around, went to get some ramen noodles, and finally went back to their house. I curled up under the blanket with them and their pups, and we began to binge-watch the movies.

If you have not already watched The Hobbit, leave this blog, watch it ASAP, and the come back. If you do not want to, you may continue reading at your own risk.

Got past the spoiler alert? Good! Now let’s dive in!

We stayed up until one o’clock in the morning to finish the movies, and THEY WERE SOOOO INTENSE! But they were awesome! Now, I am a huge Star Wars fan, but as I confessed to my triumphant brother and horrified sister, I like The Hobbit trilogy a tad more than Star Wars. First are the characters.

My top five:

Kili

Bilbo

Bard

Legolas

Gandalf

First up, Kili!

I dare you female Tolkien fans to look at that GIF for ten seconds and then post a comment stating that you honestly think he’s not one of the most handsome people you’ve ever seen. Go on. Do it! I bet you that I won’t have any comments that can honestly say that. ;). I know you boys out there are probably just rolling your eyes.

Bilbo, the main protagonist. He’s such a great guy! There’s so much character development in him. He goes from a tidy homebody to professional burglar over the course of three movies. He saves Thorin Oakenshield, manages to keep trolls from eating him and his company, kills giant creepy spiders, and knows, in Gandalf’s words, ‘true courage is knowing not when to take a life, but when to spare one.’ He’s a great guy, and if Kili wasn’t so awesome, he would be the favorite.

Bard is great. Protector of the poor, dragon slayer, general, and father. He loves his family, takes care of the citizens of Lake-town, kills Smaug, and tries to make peace between Thorin and the elves. He’s also pretty good with a bow.

You have to admit, Legolas is pretty awesome. He is a stellar archer, a good person, and very stylish. Who else was impressed when you watched the second movie and saw him standing on dwarves’ heads, shooting at orcs, while the dwarves were being swept down the river in barrels? On one foot!? Also, kudos to him for making his own choices while not being disrespectful to his father. Let’s give Legolas a hand.

Lastly, who can forget Gandalf? He’s so cool, and, as my brother says, ‘drops straight wisdom into everything.’ He fights orcs and Sauron, for goodness’ sake! He can also communicate telepathically with the Lady Galadriel.

The movies themselves were awesome. Very intense. There was a lot of violence in them, mostly bloodless. There are several occasions where somebody will cut off an orc, dwarf, or goblin’s head, and hold it or knock it onto the floor. Legolas skewers several orcs through the chest and head with arrows or, in a few instances, characters will throw swords at them. In the beginning of the first movie, we see Thorin cut off Azog’s hand, and Azog holds his arm while blood spurts from the wound. Bodies are shown during battle. And of course, who could forget the deaths of Fili, Kili, and Thorin? Wails.

There’s a love triangle between Kili, Tauriel, and Legolas. Legolas loves Tauriel, and she likes him back, but Legolas’s dad won’t let his son, the Prince, marry a lowly captain of the guard. When they capture Kili, he instantly falls for her, and she starts liking him back.

There’s some magic in this movie which you/your family may not be OK with. Radagast the Brown notices his forest dying, and after reviving a baby hedgehog with a magic crystal, follows a pair of giant spiders to their fortress Dol Guldur, where he has a brief encounter with the dead Witch-king of Angmar. Gandalf, Lord Elron, Lady Galadriel, and another wizard face off against him and other dead warriors. Gandalf repels the Necromancer, who appears as a black mist, with a white bubble. Lady Galadriel banishes the Necromancer, who also turns out to be Sauron, to Mordor.

These movies are so good. There are some parts in the first movie where I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go on, but I did. My family is not too keen on magic, which is why I don’t read stuff like Harry Potter or Percy Jackson, but they were perfectly fine with this. If you are sensitive, this might not be the best, but I enjoyed it thoroughly. The last movie had me, who never cries over movies, tearing up. When my mom watches it with me and my brother this Thanksgiving, I will be re-savoring every minute. Please comment if you watched The Hobbit and enjoyed it, or if you enjoyed this blog post. Let me know who your favorite characters are!

Be blessed,

Grace the Hobbit-lover

I love the Hobbit (Just not as much as The Lord of The Rings)! Kili’s my favorite as well. But one thing that I dislike about it is that Legolas is in it. Which differs from the books. That’s my only complaint. Well actually that’s not my only complaint, but it doesn’t matter.

What’s funny is that you share the same list of favorites as me. Mines just in different order.
