Character Interviews and More!

What’s up everybody! I didn’t blog yesterday, because I was utterly drained, but of course today, I had to be doing some reading and inspiration had to strike. It couldn’t even be two days early? Sigh whatever. At least it struck, right?

And yes, I know this was supposed to be an art post! I’M SO SORRY! I’m not promising anything anymore, but my reason is…I ran out of paper. So there. How boring. But back to the post.

I am a writer, and I would love to share about my book, but as it’s still in uncompleted rough draft edition, I’m still working everything out. So, I decided to share some other stuff.

First of all, my best friend drew an absolutely GORGEOUS cover for it, and I added the text in Canva. The title is just a space-filler, as I’m not sure it really belongs to the book.

Gorgeous, right? She’s an AMAZINGLY talented artist. Maybe is she has drawn some of the races by next Monday, I’ll post them. She asked me not to put her name on the cover, not even when I’ve published the book, so you’ll only know her as S.L.P. Hehehe!

Now, let’s get down to the real meat of this post! The Character Interviews! I’ll be working off of questions from the NaNoWriMo’s Young Novelist Workbook. Our first interview features my protagonist.

Sitting in my living room on my brown couch, I hear a knock at the door, three minutes past our scheduled meeting time. Opening it, I smiled. Outside, stood an average height 17-year old girl, with long, medium brown hair and light blue eyes. “Hi!” I said excitedly, leading her into the living room. I patted the couch and we both sat down. I pulled out my notebook. “So, could you state your name? For the record?”

“Andrea Mitchell,” she replied, taking in the room.

“I’m so happy to have you here!” I grinned, and she matched it. “Could you please tell us how your journey’s going so far? What have you been doing? And remember–” I wagged my finger at her. “–no spoilers!”

She laughed. “Alright, no spoilers. Well, after being brought from Earth to…I don’t know, whatever that other world is called, I was accepted into the Academy. After going through my Phases and getting my wings, my friends Tatum, Andrea, Tristan, Esha, and I were sent to find the rebels who had been attacking our school. We had a run-in with them, and using the power of my Birthright–”

“Pause! For our readers’ sakes, could you please explain what a Birthright is?”

“Sure.” She leaned back, lacing her fingers together. “In that world, if you’re an Alaschar, which is a winged being, you gain the the power of your birthstone. I was born in October, which means that my birthstone is an opal. My Birthright is the ability to see memories by touching things, and I should be able to sense them from other people.”

“Cool!” I chuckled, momentarily forgetting I was the one who gave her these powers!

“Anyways, using my Birthright, I was able to figure out that something was wrong at the Academy. My friends, along with my sister Penelope, her friend River, two elves named Wolfe and Izula, and I fled back to the rebel camp. That’s where we are now. We just got kitted out with some EPIC weapons, and we’re supposed to train with some of the rebel captains.” She leaned back.

“Wow!” I had brought this story to life, and I didn’t know it sounded this awesome. “Can you describe your weapon?”

“I have two, actually. I have an oak quarterstaff, and a belt of throwing knives”

“Awesome!” I leaned forward as if sharing a secret. “Can you tell me about your antagonist?”

“Well, I can’t tell who it is, because that’s a mini-spoiler.” She winked. “But I can tell you that she can seem nice, but is scary when she’s in bad-guy mode.”

“Ugh.” I made a face. “Let’s steer our thoughts away from that! Can you tell us your favorite memory?”

Her face lit up like a firecracker. “Sure! I’m sure you know this, but the readers might not. Penelope, my little sister, was adopted into our family when she was two. She was coming from a family in Texas, and I was about 8, I believe. I remember driving down and waiting for my parents to finalize things, then they came out with her!” A smile crossed Andrea’s face. “She smiled at me and waved her little fist.”

“Aww!” I felt a tear. I had no idea this was her favorite! “That’s so sweet!” I cleared my throat and looked down at my notes. “Can you tell us about the rest of your adventure? Anything you’re anxious about? Looking forward to?”

“Well, I’d like to get to know the others on my team.” Her cheeks reddened. “Especially Tristan.” I grinned. “I’m nervous about my trainer. I’m scared to see if there’s actually fighting in the future.” I pressed my lips together. She had no idea. I shook the thought away.

“Awesome! Do you have any words of wisdom–or juicy secrets–to share with the audience?”

Her eyes twinkled. “How about both? Always look into what you’re getting into, and some of the races in this book are awesome!” She rose and walked out, waving. Looking at a clock, I saw it was almost time for our last interviewee to come in, one of the side characters. Exactly as the clock showed our meeting time, there was a knock on the door. I opened it, and there stood Izula, a tall Darkwood Elf with pointy ears, black hair and electric blue eyes.

“Hey, Izula. Come in. We just talked to Andrea, and learned about her adventures. But how about you? How did you first meet her? What did you think of her?” I ushered her over to the couch.

She jumped right in, without hesitation. “She and her friends were captured and brought to my father’s fortress in Rinwood. I didn’t pay much attention to her, but I thought she could help me. My father was becoming unbearable, and I needed to leave. I cut a deal; I got her and her friends out, and she let me and my brother come with her.”

“Aww, you were so cute and tiny back then!” Her unamused look quickly quieted that thought. “How about now? How have you been helping her? What do you think of her?”

She shrugged. “She’s OK. I recently helped her solve a riddle, and we escaped the Academy, along with her friends and sister, together. Now we’re at the rebel camp, and since we’re both training under the same captain, I guess we’re bound to get to know each other better.”

“Andrea’s lucky to have you,” I told her. I thought I saw her smile a little self-consciously. “Has there been anything or anyone who’s motivated you?”

“My brother. He needs me and I need him.” I grinned.

“Moving on to the dramatic stuff, is there anything you want to tell the protagonist but can’t?”

She considered. “Well…I don’t know if she sees it, but my brother has a crush on her friend Tatum.”

“Oooh! Our lips are sealed, right guys?” I waved to the readers who I knew would be reading this. “One last thing; is there anything that you plan on doing when this novel is over?”

“Well, I’m pretty sure you have a series in mind.” I grinned. She’s so perceptive! “But I would like to explore. Maybe come to rights with my brother Fildur.”

I clapped. “Thanks Izula!”

Thank you for reading! I know this is longer than I normally write, but I hoped you enjoyed it! Maybe I’ll do an interview on our small-but-coming-up antagonist soon. Please comment! It makes me feel good to hear from you. God bless!
